  • Week 52 – February 22nd – Week 8 of lockdown 3 restrictions

Tues Feb 23rd 2021 PREMIER LEAGUE

    Leeds United 3 Southampton 0 FT – 0-0 HT

    Bamford (47’minutes), Dallas (78’minutes), Raphinha (84’minutes)

    Assists – Roberts (47’minutes), Hélder Costa (78’minutes)

Patrick Bamford scored his 13th goal of the season to help Leeds end a run of back-to-back defeats to extend Southampton’s own winless run to a far more worrying eight matches.

The striker struck early in the second half, timing his run to perfection to beat offside and latch on to Tyler Roberts’ through-ball before firing a low shot into the far corner.

A neat Stuart Dallas finish from the edge of the box and Raphinha’s superb free-kick sealed the points.
No English player has scored more Premier League goals this season than Patrick Bamford (13, level with Harry Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin).

Patrick Bamford has been directly involved in more goals in all competitions under Marcelo Bielsa than any other Leeds player (48 – 39 goals, 9 assists).

Tyler Roberts has registered two assists in his last three league appearances for Leeds, as many as he managed in his previous 40.

Stuart Dallas has netted five Premier League goals this season for Leeds, only once before managing more in a single league campaign (6 in 2014/15 for Brentford).

Leeds’ Stuart Dallas has scored five league goals this season, the most by a Northern Irishman in the Premier League since Gareth McAuley (six) in 2016-17.

Raphinha’s strike was Leeds’ first direct free-kick goal in the Premier League March 2004, when Stephen McPhail scored against Manchester City.

Leeds have scored 43 goals in the Premier League this season, last netting more after 25 games of a top-flight campaign in 1991-92 when they won the First Division (48).

Leeds have kept clean sheets in consecutive home Premier League games for the first time since February 2003 (a run of 4).

  • Week 48 – January 25th – Week 4 of lockdown 3 restrictions

Sun Jan 31st 2021 PREMIER LEAGUE

Leicester City 1 Leeds United 3 FT – 1-1 HT

    Barnes (13’minutes)

    Assists Maddison (13’minutes)

    Dallas (15’minutes), Bamford (70’minutes) Harrison (84’minutes)

    Assists Bamford (15’ 84’minutes) Raphinaha (70’minutes)

Patrick Bamford had a role in all three goals as Leeds United fought back to beat Leicester – but revealed he was “fuming” after removing himself as captain in his fantasy football team.

Harvey Barnes had opened the scoring for Leicester – who had been unbeaten in seven league games – after a wonderful run and quick exchange with James Maddison, but the Foxes’ lead lasted just 127 seconds.

Bamford found Stuart Dallas with a well-timed pass and the midfielder picked out the far corner with a low, right-footed strike.

The forward then fired into the top corner to put Leeds in front with his first goal in five league games, before unselfishly setting up Jack Harrison.

Ayoze Perez thought he had restored the Foxes’ lead in a frantic opening 20 minutes but was flagged offside, while Leeds substitute Mateusz Klich also had a goal ruled out 10 minutes later.

Kasper Schmeichel made a smart save to tip Bamford’s header on to the crossbar and Klich was in an offside position when he hacked in the rebound from close range.

Bamford had to wait until the 70th minute for his goal and then had the awareness to tee up Harrison for a tap-in as Leeds broke for a third late on.

Bamford was thanked in his Match of the Day interview for earning the journalist so many fantasy football points.

“I took myself off captain,” the Leeds striker laughed. “I’m fuming.” Captains earn twice as many points in fantasy football.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side remain 12th after their victory, while third-placed Leicester missed the chance to go second and could be overtaken by Liverpool later.

Leeds United have won nine of their 20 league matches this season – the last newly promoted side with more victories after their opening 20 Premier League games was Wigan Athletic in 2005-06 (11).

Only Tony Yeboah (17) had a hand in more goals in their first 20 Premier League games for Leeds than Patrick Bamford’s 15 this season.

League position 12th after 20 games.

Sun Dec 27th 2020 PREMIER LEAGUE

    Leeds United 1 Burnley 0 FT – 1-0 HT

    Bamford (5’minutes pen)

Patrick Bamford converted an early penalty, after being brought down by Clarets keeper Nick Pope, to earn Leeds their third home win of the season.

Patrick Bamford has scored 10 goals in 15 games for Leeds in the Premier League this season; the third-fewest appearances to reach 10 in the competition for the Whites, after Mark Viduka (nine) and Tony Yeboah (14).

  • Week 39 – November 23rd 2020 – Week 4 of lockdown 2

Sat Nov 28th 2020 PREMIER LEAGUE

    Everton 0 Leeds United 1 FT – 0-0 HT

    Raphinha (79’minutes)

    Assists Harrison (79’minutes)

Leeds earned their first win in four games by beating Everton in a thrilling match thanks to Raphinha’s long-range strike.

The Brazilian finally broke the deadlock from 20 yards with a low, fizzing shot after the two sides had carved out numerous chances in a game where managers Marcelo Bielsa and Carlo Ancelotti met for the first time.

The visitors had been left frustrated after hitting the post through Jack Harrison in the first half and drawing fine saves from Jordan Pickford, who could do little about the winner.

Leeds have picked up their first away league victory against Everton since August 1990 (3-2), having failed to win on any of their previous 13 trips to Goodison Park in league competition prior to this game.

Leeds have won as many away Premier League games in 2020-21 (three) as they did in the entirety of 2003-04 (their previous top-flight campaign), whilst they have kept consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since January 2003.

  • Week 34 – October 19th 2020 – Week 31 of lockdown

Mon 19 Oct 2020 PREMIER LEAGUE

Leeds United 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 FT – 0-0 HT

    Jiménez (70’minutes)

    Assists Kilman (70’minutes)

In only the second top-flight Elland Road meeting between these two famous old clubs since 1981, Wolves were well on top by the time Jimenez took the ball across field from the right flank after 70 minutes, before checking inside to shoot from the edge of the box.

Leeds have enjoyed an excellent start to their first top-flight season since 2004 and victory would have taken them into third, but this first home defeat since February was a bit of a reality check for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

We can’t afford to lose home games if we want to stay up, even more so with no crowds coming in, though there is stupid money in the premiership!!

Assists Zambo Anguissa (62’minutes), Tete (67’minutes)

Leeds came out on top in a seven-goal thriller against Fulham in their first Premier League home game for 16 years.

Leeds’s opening two Premier League games this season have seen 14 goals, the most in a top-flight side’s opening two matches since Wolves in 1962-63.

Tony Blair was the UK prime minister and American TV sitcom Friends had just aired its final episode the last time Leeds featured in a Premier League fixture at home.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “This won’t be a constant all year. It is very difficult to maintain the efficiency [in front of goal] we have had in these first two games.

“The characteristics of our game is to create goal scoring opportunities. In these two games we have created very little but we have scored all our chances.

“We have had two very different games. Against Liverpool we tried to get close to a very big rival and today we tried to not be caught by Fulham. Both were very difficult games.”

Not to bore people, I will only update on every 5th league game.

They did it without kicking a ball thanks to local rivals Huddersfield Town beating WBA 2-1.

In a year when they have lost three of their great 1970’s team Jack Charlton, Trevor Cherry and Norman Hunter.

Marcelo Bielsa has got us back where these three great players performed in the then top division and Europe.

A few days later, Leeds were confirmed as champions of the Championship league.
