Sun July 11th 2021 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP – FINAL

    Italy 1 England 1 FT (AET) – 0-1 HT

    Bonucci (67) Shaw (2)

    Assist Tripper (2)

    Italy win 3-2 on penalties

England’s bid to end their 55-year wait for a major trophy ended in the familiar agony of defeat in a penalty shootout as Italy claimed the Euro 2020 crown at Wembley.

On a night of anticipation, tension and ultimate heartbreak in a feverish atmosphere, England looked on course for their most joyous day since 30 July 1966 when Luke Shaw gave them the perfect start after two minutes.

Italy, unbeaten in 33 matches before this final, slowly edged their way back into the game and were level in the 67th minute when Leonardo Bonucci pounced after England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford turned Marco Verratti’s header on to a post.

And after a tense period of extra time failed to find a winner, it was on to penalties and bitter disappointment for England manager Gareth Southgate and his players, who had gone into this final on a wave of expectation and high emotion.

England missed three of their five penalties, Marcus Rashford hitting a post and Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Jadon Sancho before – so cruelly for such a fine young player – Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka also saw the giant Italy goalkeeper save his spot-kick.

Harry Kane and Harry Maguire scored for England but, while Pickford kept hopes alive with saves from Andrea Belotti and Jorginho, Domenico Berardi, Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Italy.

Of course there were the idiots after the game that were keyboard warriors and just shows what a sad world we live in.

We should be proud of them as they had done brilliant during the tournament.

Today was annoying start to the day, I went to order a couple of ECB clothing items and when I got to the checkout I got an array error. I tried again and got the same error.

I then tired in a different browser and got the same issue.

I then checked in my email and saw that I had three orders, so even though I was getting the error, the orders went through, I looked on the website and couldn’t see any phone number, so sent an email. I then contacted my credit card provider and they could only mark them.

I searched again on the website and deep down in the T&C, I found another number and called this, they could see the orders and were happy to cancel two. The reason that it was hidden, they were moving offices and there was only one phone taking calls. The lady was very helpful and got it all sorted.

Crazy the orders could still go through, even though I was getting a bad error.

    1,000 FIRST-CLASS WICKETS FOR ANDERSON

    Kent 19-5

James Anderson made his first-class debut in 2002. Now, here we are in 2021 and there is another huge milestone wicket for the Lancashire and England pace bowler.

Heino Kuhn is the man to go, caught behind for a nine-ball duck – the other four were all taken by the slips. His figures now are 7-5-3-5 and that is the 51st time he has taken five or more wickets in a first-class innings.

Just shows how the game has changed, as Jimmy has taken more test wickets then county wickets.

He will most likely be the last player to reach 1000 first class wickets with the way the game is going and of course he had to do it against my county.

  • Week 68 – June 28th – Week 7 of lockdown easing phase 3

Bidborough III 133-4 in 35 overs (Alex Latham 43*, Andrew Reid 42, Ben Harrison 8-0-33-2) beat Speldhurst II 122 in 33.3 overs (James Flemington 38, George Van Der Westhuizen 7.3-0-21-5, Ant Davis 8-3-17-2) by 11 runs.

Another Friday night monsoon made Bidborough’s second ground, Vizards, a damp affair and another reduced overs match. The decision to bowl first was looking good when we had the opposition 3 wickets down with not many runs on the board, for perhaps the fourth time this season. It was a shame therefore, that we didn’t take another wicket until the penultimate over, again, for perhaps the fourth time this season.

A sharp, controlled opening 8 overs from Siraj Deane was the highlight with a very sharp run-out from Owen Fowler.

The batting looked good for a while without ever getting ahead of the rate. A short double-Flemington partnership provided mid-innings stability, but after that partnership was broken wickets fell at alarmingly regular intervals.

A youthful stand between Arthur Plunkett and Sam Mercer gave hope and, with 25 needed from 5 overs, only wickets stood between us and victory. In the end wickets won, and we fell 11 runs short.

A bright 21 from young Plunkett included the biggest six anyone on the team had ever seen, and upon measurement we confirmed it would have indeed been six at every single cricket ground on the planet. At least the football is coming home!

This result leaves the 2s level on points with our opponents in 7th place.

I finally managed to get my first run for Speldhurst, with a push into the covers, but that was the only run as I was last out in a game we should have won.
